His Lightning Lights Up the World: Morning Devotions with Alvin Shim / Psalm 97

The Lord reigns—the earth knows this, and all people see this through the light he provides. Alvin rests on the majesty of our loving God.

Psalm 97:1-6

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;
    let the distant shores rejoice.
Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him
    and consumes his foes on every side.
His lightning lights up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all peoples see his glory.

Acts 7:36, 39-42

36 He led us out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.

39 “But we refused to obey him. Instead, we rejected him and in our hearts turned back to Egypt. 40 We told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ 41 That was the time we made an idol in the form of a calf. We brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what our own hands had made. 42 God turned away from us and gave us over to the worship of the sun, moon, and stars.

Psalm 81:6-12

“I removed the burden from their shoulders;
    their hands were set free from the basket.
In your distress you called and I rescued you,
    I answered you out of a thundercloud;
    I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Hear me, my people, and I will warn you—
    if you would only listen to me, Israel!
You shall have no foreign god among you;
    you shall not worship any god other than me.
10 I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;
    Israel would not submit to me.
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
    to follow their own devices.
