Matthew 4:16-22 (NASB)

16 “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”

17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

The First Disciples

18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Don't Fret Because of Evildoers: Morning Devotions with Gracie Ekblad / Psalm 37:1-8

Gracie offers assurance in the big picture.

Psalm 37:1-8 (ESV): He Will Not Forsake His Saints

Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

Love and the Image of God: Morning Devotions with Kevin Riley: Micah 6:8

Kevin starts the morning with the creation of man, God’s instructions for how man is to live, and prayer for transformative action led by faith.

Micah 6:8 (ESV)

He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?

Rediscipling the White Church: From Cheap Diversity to True Solidarity

by David Swanson

Responsive Litanies of Prayer

by Fran Pratt

Wake Up

God, we are gradually waking up

To the knowledge of our deep and hidden sins;

Most particularly, to the sin of racism

Which has affected our culture, psyche, and practice.

We thought we could say, “Ohm those racist generations have passed on.

The civil rights movement already happened.”

We thought we had leveled the playing field.

We thought we could ignore Whiteness.

We thought we didn’t have to see color.

But we know that we have more work to do,

To cleanse, heal and establish justice.

We quit before the work was finished.

We were wrong.

Help us see what we couldn’t see before.

Help us to examine everything.

Every custom and system,

Every group dynamic and assumption,

To leave no stone unturned in our mission

To rout out injustice;

To take every thought captive

To the loving ethic of Christ.

This work is messy.

We feel sensitive about it.

We feel overwhelmed and ashamed.

Help us not to minimize or shirk,

Nor capitulate to our fragile egos,

Nor be blinded by our privilege.

Give us robust hearts,

Willing to take an unflinching look at the racism within us.

And as we sift through our habits, culture and customs,

Examining then with a new sensitivity to injustice,

Help us to embody hope,

Peacemaking,

Restoration,

And above all, love for our neighbors.

Make us aligned to the Community of Heaven,

Diligently working for liberation.

Amen.

/

Work to do

God, forces are at work in our world,

Which are at odds with your goals:

Death and destruction,

Injustice and abuse,

Apathy and self-centeredness,

Violence and hatred,

Status quo and inertia,

Distraction and disregard.

Evil is being revealed,

And hidden sins brought to light.

But ahead we can see,

Your kingdom coming,

Your people awakening,

Your glory shining.

We can see how today’s messy revealing

Is tomorrow’s fertile soil.

So we trust,

And we follow,

And we stay awake,

And we keep watch.

And we don’t shirk our work,

And we don’t deny our complicity,

And we don’t disempower the prophets,

And we don’t silence the marginalized.

And we don’t surround ourselves with so much noise that we can’t hear your voice.

And we don’t allow ourselves to despair.

We beat our swords into ploughshares.

We set our tables and open our doors.

We make way for the Community of God.

We prepare the way for the Lord.

Help us humbly accept all the change that must happen,

In our society and in our own hearts,

To work together for new life and for good,

And to walk the peaceful way of Christ. Amen.

Love Not Sacrifice: Morning Devotions with Andrew Lewis / Hosea 6:6, 9

Andrew examines the method of atonement in forgiveness, amends, and sacrifice.

Hosea 6:6, 9 (NRSV)

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

As robbers lie in wait for someone,
    so the priests are banded together;
they murder on the road to Shechem,
    they commit a monstrous crime.

Love Your Neighbor: Morning Devotions with Danielle Riley / Mark 12:28-34

Danielle examines whether/how she loves God with her whole being.

Mark 12:28-34 (ESV): The Great Commandment

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Praying Without Giving Up: Morning Devotions with Bob Ekblad: Luke 18:1-8

Bob examines ongoing prayer.

Luke 18:1-8 (NASB): Parables on Prayer

18 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”

Sunday: Pentecost and Unity / Acts 1:3, 6-8

Sunday! We gather to worship that we might be unified and transformed from our individual selves into one spirit.

Acts 1:3, 6-8 (ESV)

He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Our Hope, Our Help, Our Shield: Morning Devotions with Gracie Ekblad / Psalm 33:12-22

Gracie begins the day with calling for help.

Psalm 33:12-22 (NCV)

12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he chose for his very own.
13 The Lord looks down from heaven
    and sees every person.
14 From his throne he watches
    all who live on earth.
15 He made their hearts
    and understands everything they do.
16 No king is saved by his great army.
No warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 Horses can’t bring victory;
they can’t save by their strength.
18 But the Lord looks after those who fear him,
those who put their hope in his love.
19 He saves them from death
and spares their lives in times of hunger.
20 So our hope is in the Lord.
He is our help, our shield to protect us.
21 We rejoice in him,
because we trust his holy name.
22 Lord, show your love to us
as we put our hope in you.

If Your Church is Willing, for George Floyd: Morning Devotions with Alvin Shim / 1 John 1:9

Alvin laments the death of George Floyd—another of many black Americans killed by police—and calls for repentance and action.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Roll Away the Stone: Morning Devotions with Kevin Riley / John 11:38-22

Jesus calls us from our darkness, but it takes a community to help us in to the light. Kevin talks about the Stones and Layers system, as designed by Chris Hoke.

John 11:38-44 (ESV): Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Disciples in Unity: Morning Devotions with Danielle Riley: John 17:20-26

Danielle prays that in our knowing God, we will show his love—and vice versa.

John 17:20-26 (ESV)

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Abiding in Jesus' Love: Morning Devotions with Bob Ekblad: John 15

Bob examines a friend’s commands.

John 15: 1, 4-5, 10-17 (NASB)

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This I command you, that you love one another.

Luke 12:13-21, 29-34,  (ESV): The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.  31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. 32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Don’t Blame, Repent Instead: Morning Devotions with Gracie Ekblad / Luke 13:1-5

Gracie addresses our impulse to find blame when things go awry, and suggests a different response.

Luke 13:1-5 (ESV): Repent or Perish

1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

All People: Morning Devotions with Alvin Shim / Titus 2:11-14

Alvin starts the day talking with a new Christian, hypothetically.

Titus 2:11-14 (ESV)

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit: Morning Devotions with Kevin Riley / Acts 1:1-11

Kevin marks Ascension Day and celebrates the Holy Spirit’s impact and direction in our lives.

Acts 1:1-11 (ESV): The Promise of the Holy Spirit

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Representing Jesus: Morning Devotions with Mike Neelley

Mike welcomes the Holy Spirit for help in living for the gospel.

Philippians 1:19-21, 27 (ESV)

19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

This devotion takes off where Mike left off in his sermon from mid-May, Green Light for the Gospel.

Our Loving Spirit: Morning Devotions with Andrew Lewis

Andrew leads a morning exploration of our whole transformation.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NRSV)

26 A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances.

From Paralysis to Empowerment: Morning Devotions with Bob Ekblad

Bob examines the obstacles we put up that keep us from healing and obedience from Jesus.

John 5:2-9 (NASB): The Healing at Bethesda

Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted. A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
