Tierra Nueva began in the crucible of war in Central America in the 1980s. Inspired by Jesus’ ministry, Gracie and I poured ourselves into service to the poor. We were deeply affected by the poverty and violence in Central America. We were also deeply troubled—even outraged—by the negative contributing role of the U.S. government.
In our ministry, we strove to invite outstanding theologians to teach courses in contextual theology and ministry at the margins. Yet something remained missing. Despite our best efforts, neither our reflections nor the accomplished teachers could bring about the breakthroughs we sought for the broken. Their needs were great, their problems complex. They needed miraculous, visible interventions from God.
Our ministry in the jail and migrant camps was deeply humbling and frustrating.I began to see the limitations of the “gospel” I was preaching. I watched people come to faith in jail Bible studies, only to see them crash and burn upon leaving the jail. The gospel I was preaching did not have the power to save—despite the readings and teaching I received from “the best.”
The charismatic movement began to attract my attention because of its ability to recruit and empower, but due to our negative experiences with charismatic Christians in Central America—often legalistic, politically conservative, and corrupt—we had shunned anything to do this movement. Our focus on advocacy, resistance, service, and social transformation made us the polar opposite of conservative charismatic Christians in a deeply divided global church.
Finally in 2003, Gracie and I were led to a pastors’ conference at the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship in Canada. My encounter with the Holy Spirit in Toronto and two months later in France with TACF’s pastors John and Carol Arnott so deeply affected me that I found myself desiring nothing else than to seek God’s presence in prayer and worship. This experience opened me to a whole new world of theological reflection and ministry practice. It has also expanded our network to include many churches and ministries world wide, who have much to teach us for the benefit of ourselves, people on the margins, and our mainstream church supporters.
The fruit we’ve seen has been unprecedented in my 25 years of ministry. We have seen many physical healings and hundreds of conversions in our jail ministry, our congregation, and the Family Support Center. New approaches to inner healing and deliverance are bringing breakthroughs to people we have failed with in the past.
This transformation has not meant a repudiation of the past, but rather an expansion of new approaches to God and ministry. At Tierra Nueva, two once-divided worlds are coming together—the Holy Spirit’s empowering for ministry and advocacy to the most marginalized. God is doing something very creative and new in our ministry, bringing the evangelical, social prophetic, academic, contemplative and the charismatic together in a dynamic mix.
I believe that God has positioned Tierra Nueva as a bridge between the lower margins and upper margins, the social prophetic, liberal mainline church people and the new wave charismatic missionaries and evangelists. I am convinced that the whole body of Christ is needed in order for us to see the Kingdom of God advance in the dark places of our world. We are entering a time a fruitfulness that will lead to successes we could never have imagined.
